Monsters Won't Get You
I always thought it was a "crime" for parents to terrify their kids into behaving by telling them that monsters would get them if they misbehaved. But I never thought anyone would really be arrested for it! So I was surprised by a recent news item, about a man arrested in
Oklahoma after leaving his young child alone in the car while he went into a bar. The child told police that his father told him if he left the car, monsters would eat him. It isn't funny, of course, if you think about the actual danger that could have befallen the child, or if you think about the confusion that leads to this kind of lapse in parenting. The official charge was amusing though: "encouraging a minor child to be in need of supervision." As if young children require any encouragement to need supervision!
